· She is a nurse. |
· The sun. |
| cero (nada) | Cuándoplurales/incontables en general; comidas, deportes, idiomas | EjemploDogs are loyal. · I like music. · at home. |

|---|---|---|
| go to school = estudiar | Con the (el edificio)go to the school = ir al edificio | Diferenciaun alumno vs un padre que va a una reunión |
| be in hospital = estar ingresado | Con the (el edificio)be at the hospital = estar allí | Diferenciaenfermo vs visitando o trabajando |
| go to prison = ser encarcelado | Con the (el edificio)go to the prison = ir a la cárcel | Diferenciapreso vs abogado o visita |
| go to bed = irse a dormir | Con the (el edificio)sit on the bed = sentarse en la cama | Diferenciadormir vs el mueble |
| go to church = ir a misa | Con the (el edificio)see the church = ver la iglesia | Diferenciael culto vs el monumento |
| at university = estudiando allí | Con the (el edificio)at the university = en el recinto | Diferenciaser estudiante vs estar en el sitio |
| go home = irse a casa | Con the (el edificio)go to the house = ir a esa casa | Diferenciahome nunca lleva to |
Cuándo «the» es obligatorio
| Caso | Ejemplo | Por qué |
|---|---|---|
| Único en el mundo | Ejemplothe sun · the moon · the sky · the internet | Por quéno hay otro |
| Superlativos | Ejemplothe best · the most expensive | Por quésolo uno puede ser el mejor |
| Ordinales | Ejemplothe first time · the second floor | Por quéla posición es única |
| Ríos, mares, océanos | Ejemplothe Ebro · the Mediterranean · the Atlantic | Por quéconvención |
| Cordilleras y archipiélagos | Ejemplothe Pyrenees · the Canary Islands | Por quévan en plural |
| Países en plural o con Estado | Ejemplothe USA · the UK · the Netherlands | Por quéllevan states, kingdom… |
| Instrumentos musicales | Ejemploplay the guitar · play the piano | Por quéojo: los deportes NO llevan the |
| the + adjetivo = el grupo | Ejemplothe rich · the elderly · the unemployed | Por quése refiere a toda la gente así |
| Con of | Ejemplothe capital of Spain · the end of the film | Por quéof ya concreta cuál es |
| the same | EjemploWe had the same idea.
