Un idiom es una expresión fija cuyo significado no se deduce de las palabras sueltas: it’s raining cats and dogs = llueve a cántaros. Bien usados suben mucho el nivel, pero mal traducidos suenan raro. Apréndelos enteros y úsalos con cabeza (más en conversación que en un escrito formal).
Cómo usarlos sin que suene raro
Apréndelos por nivel y usa solo los que domines. Uno o dos bien colocados te suben el Speaking; cinco metidos a la fuerza suenan a lista memorizada.
Son fijos: no puedes cambiar las palabras. Es a piece of cake, no a slice of cake. Si no recuerdas la forma exacta, dilo en inglés normal y no arriesgues.
La mayoría son informales. Valen para el Speaking y para un email a un amigo; no valen para un informe formal ni una carta de reclamación.

Estos encajan al dar tu opinión o comparar, que es justo lo que te van a pedir. Son los de mejor relación riesgo-beneficio.
El error típico del hispanohablante
Nunca traduzcas un idiom palabra por palabra — es it’s raining cats and dogs, no una versión literal del español. Y resérvalos para contextos informales/hablados, no para un informe formal.
No cambies ni una palabra: a piece of cake (no a slice), cost an arm and a leg (no a foot), once in a blue moon (no a blue day). Un idiom a medias queda peor que no usarlo.
No los acumules. Dos en una respuesta de dos minutos van sobrados; más y deja de sonar a ti para sonar a libro de frases.
Hay modismos españoles que en inglés no existen. Si no sabes el equivalente real, di la idea a pelo: it was very easy es correcto; la traducción literal no.
