Este grupo de conectores de nivel alto sirve para expresar concesión (admitir algo que va en contra) e indiferencia ante cualquier caso. Las universales con -ever (whatever, however, whoever, wherever) significan "da igual qué/cómo/quién": You'll pass whatever happens. Y las concesivas formales van más allá de although: much as (Much as I like it...), albeit (a short, albeit intense, trip), notwithstanding, no matter how.

    Universales (-ever / no matter)

whatever / however / whoever / wherever = da igual: However hard it is, keep going.
no matter + what/how/who: No matter what you say, I'll go.

    Concesivas formales

ENmuch as + clause: Much as I respect her, I disagree.
ESmuch as + oración: Much as I respect her, I disagree.
ENalbeit + phrase: a useful, albeit costly, solution.
ESalbeit + sintagma: a useful, albeit costly, solution.
ENnotwithstanding = despite (very formal): Notwithstanding the delay, we finished.
ESnotwithstanding = a pesar de (muy formal): Notwithstanding the delay, we finished.

    Conceder y después rebatir

ENGranted, … yet …: concede in one word and turn it round in the next clause: *Granted, phones distract, yet a blanket ban answers the wrong question.*
ESGranted, … yet …: concedes en una palabra y giras en la oración siguiente: *Granted, phones distract, yet a blanket ban answers the wrong question.*
ENWhile it is true that…, this overlooks…: the long version, for an essay: *While it is true that attainment rose, this overlooks how small the group was.*
ESWhile it is true that…, this overlooks…: la versión larga, para un ensayo: *While it is true that attainment rose, this overlooks how small the group was.*
ENSpoken versions of the same move: *That said, … · To be fair, …* · I take your point, but…
ESLas mismas fórmulas habladas: *That said, … · To be fair, …* · I take your point, but…

    El error típico del hispanohablante

whatever ≠ what ever: una palabra para "da igual qué". Y however aquí es "no importa cómo", no "sin embargo".
albeit une un sintagma, no una oración completa: albeit slowly, no "albeit it was slow".
Una sola palabra de giro por frase: Although it is popular, it does not work, no "Although it is popular, yet it does not work".
Granted abre solo, sin that: Granted, phones distract, no "Granted that phones distract, but…".
