Para explicar el porqué de algo, el inglés distingue según lo que venga después. because y since/as son conjunciones y van con una oración completa (sujeto + verbo): I stayed home because it was raining. En cambio because of y due to son preposiciones y van con un sustantivo (o -ing): because of the rain. El fallo típico es meter una frase entera tras "because of"; si la necesitas, usa due to the fact that.

    Oración vs sustantivo

because / since / as + oración completa: ...because it rained.
because of / due to + sustantivo / -ing: ...because of the rain.
due to the fact that + oración (formal): cuando necesitas frase completa.

    El error típico del hispanohablante

Nada de oración tras because of: because of the delay (no "because of it was late").
No lo confundas con because (+ verbo): no son intercambiables.

    Preposiciones fijas que memorizar

surprised at / by / about algo: surprised at the result.laugh at alguien/algo: No one laughed at his joke.
