Muchos verbos, adjetivos y sustantivos van casados con una preposición fija: depend on, good at, afraid of. No hay regla lógica: la preposición es parte de la palabra y se aprende junta. El problema para nosotros es que en español la preposición suele ser otra (depender de → depend on), así que el calco es el enemigo número uno.

Léela en voz alta: la columna del medio es lo que te sale solo, y es lo que hay que desaprender.
Verbos que NO llevan preposición

Cómo aprendértelas de verdad
No aprendas la preposición sola. Aprende el bloque entero con un ejemplo: no «depend + on» sino «it depends on the weather». En el examen te vuelve la frase, no la regla.
Cuando veas una en un texto, apunta la frase entera. Diez bloques que dominas valen más que una lista de cincuenta a medias.
En el examen, si la preposición no coincide con el español, suele ser justo lo que te están preguntando. Desconfía de la que te suena natural.
Los errores típicos del hispanohablante
Cuidado con los calcos: depend on (no of), married to (no with), think about/of (no in), arrive at/in (no to), consist of (no in).
Algunos verbos NO llevan preposición aunque en español sí: attend the meeting, phone me, discuss it (no attend to / phone to / discuss about).
